1. India helped Maldives to preserve its pre-Islamic heritage.

A) A financial grant of approximately Rs. 2.75 crores (4 million Maldivian rufiyaa) by India is helping restore one of the many archeological sites in the Maldives that are remnants of the country’s Buddhist past.

B) The two countries signed seven Memorandums of Understanding that also included the preservation of heritage sites, under which the financial grant is being disbursed.

C) For the Maldives, Landhoo island serves as an important link in understanding and researching the country’s pre-Islamic past.

D) In 2001, a coral block was found at the Mahabodhi archaeological site, with inscriptions on four sides of the block, depicting a version of the southern Brahmi script from the Pallava period, dating to the 6th century AD. 

E) Historians consider this inscription to be the oldest surviving script to be found in the country. “The inscription is a mantra of Vajrayana Buddhism, a form of Buddhism that had existed in the Maldives in ancient times. 

2. Special kinds of rocks on Mars hint at violent volcanic eruptions.

A) A team of researchers at the Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration has determined that the olivine-rich bedrock in the Gusev crater and in and around the Jezero crater on Mars may be a special type of rock called “ignimbrite”.

B) This rock is both igneous and sedimentary and forms due to explosive eruptions from volcanoes.

C) Bedrock rich in olivine and carbonate links the Gusev crater, which was explored 16 years ago by NASA’s Spirit rover, and the Nili Fossae region, where the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover is currently exploring.

3. Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya has launched PLASTINDIA 2023.

A) PLASTINDIA refers to a series of exhibitions under the Plastindia Foundation, which will hold the 11th International Plastics Exhibition, Conference and Convention from 1st-5th February, 2023 at ITPO Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

B) The exhibition will provide opportunities for employment generation, facilitate the growth of the Indian plastic industry and make India a hub for sourcing plastic for global needs.

4. France’s Naval Group announced that it is withdrawing from the Indian Navy’s P-75I submarine project.

A) The Project 75 (India)-class submarines (P-75I) are a planned class of diesel-electric submarines, which are to be built for the Indian Navy.

B) Under this project, the Indian Navy intends to acquire six conventional, diesel-electric attack submarines, which will also feature advanced capabilities – including air-independent propulsion (AIP), and anti-ship warfare (AShW), and other features.

5. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has invited applications for the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for drones and drone components.

A) The eligibility criteria for the PLI scheme for drones and drone components includes an annual sales turnover of INR 2 crore for drone companies and INR 50 lacs for drone components manufacturers; and value addition of over 40% of sales turnover.

6. J&K Delimitation Commission has issued final notification, reserved 43 Assembly seats for Jammu, 47 for Kashmir.

A) In two significant recommendations, the Delimitation Commission has asked the Central government to reserve two seats for ‘Kashmiri Migrants (essentially Pandits)’ as well as nominate representatives of people displaced from PoJK and settled in J&K, in the Assembly of the Union Territory.

B) In the new Assembly, the panel has said, these seats should continue to be set aside, but some representatives of people who moved here from PoJK should be nominated to the House.

7. An apex-predator dinosaur has been discovered by Argentine palaeontologists.

A) This dinosaur measured to be as tall as three stories building from its nose to its tail. 

B) The details regarding this newly discovered dinosaur have been detailed in a study that has been published in the Nature journal Scientific Reports. The scientific name “Maip macrothorax” is given to this dinosaur.

8. Neobank Open emerged as the 100th unicorn of India.

A) The term ‘Unicorn’ refers to the rarest of the rare startups who become Unicorns obtaining a valuation of more than USD 1 billion. Indian Startup Ecosystem ranked  the third-largest in the world in number of Unicorns, as of 5th May 2022, is home to 100 unicorns with a total valuation of USD 332.7 billion.

B) In the first four months of 2022, India has given birth to 14 unicorns with a total valuation of USD 18.9 billion.

9. May 9 is celebrated as “Victory Day” in Russia.

A) To commemorate the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazi Germany in World War II. First time celebrated in 1965 under Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.
