What does Sahkar se Samriddhi mean?

Sahkar se Samriddhi means prosperity through cooperatives. The Narendra Modi led government created a new Ministry named ‘Ministry of Co-operation’ on 6 July 2021. The vision of this Ministry is ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’.

Objectives of the Ministry

  • The Ministry aims to strengthen the cooperative movement in the country. 
  • A separate legal, administrative and policy framework will be provided.
  • It will assist in simplifying the processes for ease of doing business for cooperatives. Development of multi-state cooperatives (MSCS) will be enabled.

What are cooperatives?

Cooperative is a business or an organization which is owned and run jointly by its members. It is democratically owned by the members to meet their economic, cultural and social needs. Each member has a right to vote irrespective of the capital contributed.

Why cooperatives play an important role in India?

Cooperatives play an important role in the agricultural, housing and banking sectors of India. 

Cooperatives based economic development model has been successful in India as each member works with a spirit of responsibility. 

Second Ministry to be created under Modi Government 2.0

The Ministry of Cooperatives is the second ministry formed under the Modi Government since May 2019. In May 2019, the Jal Shakti Ministry was created. It was a merger of two existing ministries – Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.

The government laso merged two ministries during its first term. The Ministry of Urban Development, and housing and urban poverty alleviation were merged to create the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry (MohUA)  in 2017.

Amul – Located in Gujarat, it is one of the world’s largest producers of milk.

Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) – Headquartered in Delhi, it is India’s largest fertiliser manufacturer.

Indian Coffee House – It was founded in 1936 by the Coffee Cess Committee. It is a chain of restaurants. 

Minister in charge

Amit Shah was declared as the minister of the cooperation ministry. He is also the head of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
