1. Shri Narayan Rane inaugurated the first Centre of Excellence for Khadi (CoEK) in New Delhi on 11TH May 2022.

A) Centre of Excellence for Khadi is in the process of developing a Knowledge Portal for Khadi to disseminate design directions to reach out to all the Khadi Institutions. 

B) Knowledge portal entails design directions on—colour, silhouettes, weave, surface, textures, prints, closures, size chart and trims and finishes.

2. Shri Bhagwant Khuba will take part in ‘Intersolar Europe 2022’.

A) Union Minister of State for Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Shri Bhagwant Khuba will leave for Munich, Germany tomorrow to attend Intersolar Europe 2022 to be held from 11th May to 13th May 2022.

B) The event is crucial in terms of potential benefits that India can garner such as technology transfer in the field of solar, investments in solar manufacturing by international investors, investment from KfW development bank, and knowledge sharing pacts with Europe.

3. Recently, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has abolished the network operation and control center (NOCC) charges.

A) NOCC is a charge levied on the use of space segments by telecom service providers for satellite telephony, broadband, etc.

B) Currently, Sunil Bharti Mittal’s OneWeb and Elon Musk’s Starlink are the providers planning to launch satellite broadband services in India using low-earth orbit satellites.

4. On the 10th of May, World Lupus Day is observed annually.

A) This day is observed with the aim of generating awareness about this autoimmune disease which is also known as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It can affect the skin, brain, kidneys, as well as other organs of an individual. 

B) This day was created by Lupus Canada in the year 2004 with the aim of raising awareness about this disease, providing better services to the suffering patients, increasing funding for research, and improving epidemiological data. The World Lupus Federation sponsors this day.

5. Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh,  launched the second phase of the Ladli Laxmi scheme (Ladli Laxmi scheme-2.0) on May 8th, 2022.

A) Ladli Laxmi scheme – 2.0 is an innovative initiative to encourage girl children to pursue higher education and make them self-dependent.

B) The Ladli Laxmi Scheme has been implemented by the government of Madhya Pradesh since 2007 to enhance the economic and educational status of the girls.

C) Ladli Laxmi scheme is a comprehensive scheme that offers financial assistance for a girl from birth until her marriage in instalments.

6. Scientists discover a hidden water reserve under the Antarctic, enough to submerge Statue of Unity.

A) In what could be a game-changing discovery, scientists have detected vast quantities of water hiding in the sediments beneath an Antarctic ice stream that could boost our understanding of how it might affect sea levels across the world.

B) Researchers calculated that if they could squeeze out this water on the surface, it would form a lake that ranged from 220 to 820 meters deep. This water would be enough to submerge the Statue of Unity, which is 182 meters in height.

7. Scientists of JawaharLal Nehru University have  identified a new way to better treat kala-azar.

A) After successfully finding a new way to attack malaria and tuberculosis, a team of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) researchers is once again leading the way in molecular biology with their latest approach to better treat Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL).

B) Kala-azar is one of the biggest health problems identified globally, which, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), is fatal if left untreated in over 95% of cases. Symptoms include irregular bouts of fever, weight loss, enlargement of the spleen and liver, and anaemia. It is one of the top parasitic diseases with outbreak and mortality potential.

8. Blue Origin NS-21 mission to include first Mexican-origin woman to space.

A) Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Jeff Bezos, has announced the crew flying on its NS-21 mission.

B) The six passengers going on a spaceflight on the company’s New Shepard spacecraft will include electrical engineer and former NASA test lead Katya Echazarreta, who will become the first Mexican-born woman and youngest American woman to fly to space.
