History of World Olympic Day

Doctor Gruss, an IOC (International Olympic Committee) member in Czechoslovakia came up with the idea of observing World Olympic Day during the 41st Session of IOC in Stockholm in 1947. The proposal was accepted during the 42nd IOC Session in St Moritz in January 1948. 

The National Olympic Committee (NOC) decided to celebrate the day on June 23rd to honour the IOC’s foundation at Sorbonne, Paris.  The Olympic Games are inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were held from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD in Olympia, Greece. 

Significance of World Olympic Day

  • This day aims at promoting sports and spreads the message of making sports an integral part of life. 
  • It encourages people around the world to participate in the Olympics irrespective of their age, gender, social background.
  • The Olympic day is based on three pillars: “move”, “learn” and “discover”.

First International Olympic Day

The 1st International Olympic Day was observed on June 23, 1948

It was celebrated by countries including Great Britain, Canada, Portugal, Switzerland, Greece, Belgium, Austria, Uruguay and Venezuela.

World Olympic Day 2021

The Tokyo Olympics will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021. The NOC has taken initiatives digitally through webinars, online workouts and virtual Olympic challenges.

This day has been associated with the Olympic day run for the last 20 years. The first Olympic Day run was launched in 1987. 45 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated to cover a distance of 10 km.

At present, more than 150 NOCs organize the event in their respective countries.
