1) Today in 1979 India’s first experimental remote sensing satellite, Bhaskara-1 was launched by ISRO.

The satellite was named after 7th century Indian Mathematician Bhaskara-1. The chief purpose of the satellite was to collect data on Hydrology, Oceanography, forestry and telemetry.

2) Today in 1989 a 5 year old girl Sheetal Pandya set a World Record by skating from Delhi to Bombay.

Sheetal Pandya spent nearly 52 days on the road. Her father nearly raised $12,500 for cancer research.

3) Today in 1997 Mahesh Bhupati became the first Indian to win a Grand Slam Title.

India’s first Grand Slam was Mahesh Bhupati and his Japanese mixed doubles partner Rika Hiraki’s French Open title.
